What is acoustic leak detection?
Acoustic leak detection is a long-established and widely used method for buried pipe. Water escaping a pressurized line makes noise: a hiss at the orifice, and vibration that travels along the pipe wall and through the ground. Acoustic equipment listens for it.
How does it actually work?
Three tools, in rough order of sophistication.
Listening sticks and ground microphones. A technician walks the line and listens at contact points: valves, hydrants, meter pits, or the ground surface. Skilled operators are remarkably good at this. It is slow, and it depends on the operator.
Leak noise correlators. Two sensors are clamped to the pipe either side of the suspected leak. Both hear the same noise, at slightly different times. From that time difference, the pipe material and the sensor spacing, the correlator calculates where the noise originated, often to within a few feet under good conditions.
Acoustic loggers. Sensors left on a network overnight, recording noise levels while everything is quiet. Areas with persistent night-time noise get investigated. This is mostly a utility distribution technique.
What is acoustic detection good at?
- Buried pressurized mains. This is what it was built for.
- Pinpointing before excavation. Digging in the wrong place costs far more than the survey.
- Metal pipe. Cast iron, ductile iron, copper, and steel all carry sound well.
- Confirming a leak you already suspect from a pressure drop or an unexplained bill.
Where does it struggle?
- Plastic pipe. PVC, PE, and PEX absorb sound. Modern plastic networks are the reason tracer gas exists.
- Low pressure. No pressure, no noise. Gravity drains and waste lines are effectively silent.
- Noisy environments. Pumps, traffic, and building equipment mask the signal.
- Small continuous leaks. A running toilet is a real cost, and nobody sends a correlator to a washroom.
- Timing. It works only when someone is there with the equipment.
How much does acoustic leak detection cost?
It is priced as a service, per visit, and varies by region, access, and survey length. Municipal distribution surveys are usually priced per mile or per day. Building surveys are usually a call-out plus time. Anyone quoting a fixed national number has not seen your site.

When should a building use acoustic detection?
When you already know something is wrong and you need to know where before you dig or cut. A failed pressure test, a water bill that jumps with no explanation, a wet patch with no obvious source, or a buried service line between the street and the building.
Can flow data do part of this job?
More than most people expect. A flow sensor on the main line will not pinpoint a buried leak to within a few feet, but it does three things a survey cannot do until it is booked:
- Confirms the leak exists, and shows the night it started.
- Sizes it, from the flow rate.
- Characterizes it, from the time-of-day pattern. An overnight constant is a fixture or a buried line. A fixed daily block is irrigation. A spike during occupied hours is usually just use.

So the two are not rivals. Flow data narrows the question. Acoustic answers the last part of it, on the pipe, in one spot, before anyone digs. Buildings that have both call the specialist less often, and brief them better when they do.
What is the alternative for ongoing protection?
Always-on detection.
