The findings come from 480,000+ water alerts across 14,000+ buildings in the United States and Canada, monitored by Alert Labs sensors on the AlertAQ™ water intelligence platform. The numbers come from what sensors recorded in real buildings, not from survey responses.

How often do commercial buildings flood?

Roughly 1 in 4 monitored buildings had at least one flood event in 2025. Not a drip: water where it should not be, detected by sensors. For a portfolio of 40 buildings, that is roughly 10 buildings with a flood event in a year. The question is not whether a building floods. It is whether anyone finds out in time.

When do floods happen?

56% of floods happen after hours. Nobody is in the building to see them start. This is the single strongest argument for sensors: a burst pipe at 2 a.m. on a Saturday runs unnoticed until Monday morning unless something is watching the water. The sensors watch so nobody has to.

How fast can buildings respond to leaks?

Across buildings monitored with Alert Labs sensors, the median flood alert was resolved in 57 minutes. Compare that to a leak discovered on the next walkthrough, hours or days later. Water damage scales with time: the difference between 57 minutes and a weekend is the difference between a mop and a restoration contractor.

The report flagged 3.4 billion gallons of water waste in a single year: running toilets, stuck irrigation, pinhole leaks, and equipment failures that never make a mess but quietly inflate bills. The report attaches $28 to $41 million in potential costs to that volume.
