AlertAQ™ detects irrigation leak

The facility team at the apartment complex installed Alert Labs water flow sensors on the main water line to monitor the building for abnormal water use, leaks and other problems. Soon after turning on the irrigation system, AlertAQ™ identified an overnight water usage of 160 gallons per minute.

Equipped with this information and after an analysis of water systems records, the facility team narrowed down the cause of the high water use. An irrigation pipe had broken underground and was leaking approximately 40,000 gallons of water per day.

The leak was repaired within a few weeks and water use returned to a normal rate of about 20,000 gallons per day.

Based on the cost per gallon of water including sewer charges in the city of Stamford, CT, the annual savings are estimated to be $262,800 (40,000 gal./day avg. × $0.018 gal. × 365 days).

Average Water usage before and after irrigation pipe fixed

Gallons per day avg.
Before repair 60,300
After repair 21,600
Decrease 64%

The AlertAQ™ Water Use Timeline shows that daily water use dropped dramatically after July 6 when the broken irrigation pipe was fixed.
