It is with broken hearts that we say goodbye to our friend and colleague Zachary Jacobi, who passed away August 7, 2019.

Zach was the first full-time employee when Alert Labs was founded in 2015. A self-described “software grumbler”, his official title was Team Lead and Senior Developer. He was an instrumental part in getting this company to where we are. If your home has been saved from water damage by one of our sensors, you can thank Zach.

The impact that he’s had on our lives is immeasurable. Zach was brilliant, kind, and extremely likeable. He seemed to know at least a little bit about everything. He was a voracious reader and frequently recommended books to coworkers; his favourite recommendation was “anything by Lois McMaster Bujold”.

He took his civic duty seriously. His passion for politics kept him out late in the fall, canvassing neighbourhoods to make sure people got out to vote for local elections. He kept us current on news, regularly discussed philosophy, and out-geeked everyone in the office. He brought us together for weekly group lunches, after-work D&D sessions, and evening bike trips to the Hydrocut.

He was deliberate and thoughtful. He was always working to better himself, whether it was through structured leadership courses or self-guided french lessons. He budgeted his time to make the most of life, and budgeted his money to make it count: he was a habitual philanthropist. And he had style, doing it all while wearing outrageous space print or bright orange pants.
The world is a better place for having had Zach in it, and we are better people for knowing him.
He is loved. He is missed.
The family asks that everyone register as an organ donor.
